For Mary by Eve Chancellor

For Mary

I must have been looking for God

again, when I saw you, standing there,

in your white socks and bobble hat,

clicking at the horses. Bless you.

It's your laugh I remember

most vividly. Always too loud,

always at the wrong damn thing.

The way it filled the room,

like your perfume. Of course,

I never met you. But sometimes,

when I'm rubbing cream onto old scars,

there you are, little one.

A posy of hay clenched in your tiny fist,

staring straight into the eyes of an angel.
