Flowers
Someone should probably tell the kid
to stop picking those flowers. Someone
should probably tell him that they were
planted with a loving hand, in this little space,
for everyone to enjoy. I don’t know where
his parents are. It’s just me on the bench
and him by the flowerbed with a bunch
of bluebells in his mitts. There he goes,
riffling through the foliage, looking for more.
His glasses are held onto his head with one
of those little straps, and I don’t think I’ve ever
seen a smile so wide. Someone should
tell this kid to stop picking the flowers.
And there’s me thinking “go ahead, my man –
gather the colour while you can...”
