Loitering in Exmouth by Janet Hatherley

Loitering in Exmouth

Here’s Mum,

a lightweight in a folding wheelchair,

no longer able, with her love of words,

to hold a thought for long,

a fork for carrot cake

or write poetry—

and me, pointing out a big tree,

how old it must be.

She saying, with her love

of the surreal, a bigger tree is obligatory.
